In the ever-evolving world of percussion, finding innovative solutions to enhance performance and streamline setup is incredibly important. Enter the Black Swamp Percussion MultiLegs, a groundbreaking (or groundsetting?) percussion accessory designed to simplify and optimize the integration of bass drums into modern percussion setups.
A Brief History of the MultiLegs
The story of the BSP MultiLeg begins in 2012, when Black Swamp Percussion collaborated with BSP Artist Endorser Morris Palter to develop the MultiBass—the first bass drum featuring integrated legs. This innovation was embraced by the modern percussion community, setting the stage for further advancements in percussion setups, arranging, and composition.
Check out our one-on-one conversation with Morris about the origins of the MultiBass on the Black Swamp Blog.
Before this, Eric Sooy, BSP President, had been experimenting with makeshift stands to support individual bass drums during percussion-heavy symphony performances. This idea lingered until 2014, when it resurfaced and led to a brainstorming session at Black Swamp Percussion. The breakthrough moment came with the simple yet ingenious idea to attach a clamp to the telescoping legs of the MultiBass. By modifying the clamp from our trusted woodblock mount, we created the BSP MultiLeg—a solution that would revolutionize bass drum setups.
MultiLeg Design: More Than Just Bass Drum Legs
The genius of the MultiLeg lies in its simplicity and functionality. Gone are the days of lugging heavy chairs to rehearsals or performances to position your bass drum. The MultiLeg offers a far less cumbersome and infinitely more versatile solution for integrating a bass drum horizontally into any percussion setup.
Mounting the MultiLeg: The mount clamps directly to the hoop of any existing bass drum, with padded surfaces to protect the drum’s hoop from damage. The clamp is secured with a sturdy knob, ensuring a tight fit without interfering with other adjustments. A standout feature is that the mount attaches only to the bottom hoop of the bass drum, leaving both top and bottom hoops free for tuning adjustments. This single connection point allows for quick and easy tuning, making it a practical choice for stage performances or practice sessions with multiple users.
Adjustable Legs: Once the mount is secured, the lightweight aluminum legs can be adjusted from 15 inches when fully collapsed to 33 inches when fully extended. The telescoping legs are fully height-adjustable, accommodating various playing positions and heights. Additionally, by setting one leg at a different height, you can quickly adjust the bass drum from a flat to an angled position, allowing for seamless integration with other instruments in your setup.
Isolating Feet: At Black Swamp Percussion, we believe that details matter, and the MultiLeg is no exception. Instead of standard rubber bumpers, the legs feature specially designed feet with an air pocket or isolation zone, enhancing the drum’s lower frequencies and adding depth to its sound.
Compact and Lightweight: A set of 3 MultiLegs have a combined weight of less than 4 pounds, and easily fit into a gig bag or hard case, making them ideal for travel and storage. This is a huge benefit for those on the move or in need of a simple storage solution.
How To Use The MultiLegs
Turn your bass drum over with the resonant side facing upward.
Take one MultiLeg and loosen the tension knob at the head of the leg.
Between two bass drum lugs, mount the head of the MultiLeg on the hoop of the bass drum.
The leg should be pointing outward from the bass drum. The two rubber fingers of the MultiLeg should be flush against the hoop.
Tighten the knob on the head of the MultiLeg against the hoop of the drum.
Repeat steps 1-4 with the remaining two MultiLegs.
Who Can Benefit from the MultiLegs?
Touring Musicians: For musicians on the road, the MultiLegs offer the versatility and reliability needed to optimally position any bass drum. Their fully adjustable design ensures that you can accommodate any setup for a world-class performance.
Musical Theater Percussionists: In tight performance spaces, where every inch counts, the MultiLegs provide the flexibility and mobility required to fit multiple musicians and instruments into a compact area.

Instead of searching for different drums or awkwardly positioning chairs, use the MultiLegs to adapt any existing bass drum to fit specific height or placement needs. They are a game changer for both ensemble and solo performances. Music directors will also appreciate their easy storage and compatibility with any bass drum featuring wood hoops.
